Fixing Mail Configuration without guessing
Fix mail configuration from public MX and sender-policy evidence, not inbox folklore—align routing records, change one layer at a time, then rescan.

When a client says mail is fine because "we get messages in Gmail," I treat that as a story about one mailbox, not about public mail-routing or sender-policy. Fixing without guessing means matching that public surface to the mailbox vendor you actually intend to run.
I am skeptical of dashboards that show a green check while MX still points at a cancelled host. Public records do not care about your internal wiki.
Outcome you want
After the fix, public MX and related sender-policy TXT records match the written mail vendor. A follow-up scan on the same domain agrees. Portal notes name the provider, who owns the zone, and when you rescanned. Sibling DNS inventory issues stay on the DNS records ticket if the problem is really a stale A or NS line.
Boundaries before you edit
Only change DNS and mail-provider settings you own, manage, or have written permission to operate. SlaySlop is read-only. It will not publish SPF for you. Insights come from the public surface of the domain. This is not a pentest. It is not proof that every mailbox on earth accepts your mail, and it is not a substitute for delivery testing inside the vendor console.
Mail configuration sits with Domain insights siblings: DNS records, DNSSEC, WHOIS, ports, redirects, server location. Inventory of A/NS is not mailbox policy. Signed DNS is not SPF. Keep the lanes.

Step 1: lock the apex and the vendor
Write the apex (and any mail-on-subdomain names in scope). Write the mailbox product named in the contract. If intent is "no mail at this domain," say that explicitly so you do not invent a policy.

Pull the scan finding. Then, on a path you are allowed to assess, glance at public MX and common policy TXT names. Dig is not the product. It is how I confirm I understand the surface before I argue with a report.

dig "$DOMAIN" TXT +short | head -n 40Compare MX hosts to the vendor's published guidance. Compare SPF include chains and DMARC policy to what the security questionnaire claims. If the scan shows a gap the dig path does not, trust the public collection in the report and dig from a non-VPN path.
Step 3: change one layer
Wrong MX: fix routing at the DNS host first. Do not rewrite SPF while MX still points at a dead vendor.
Policy gap with correct MX: publish or correct SPF, DKIM selector TXT, and DMARC as the vendor documents. Avoid "v=spf1 +all" folklore. Avoid stacking three SPF TXT records. One SPF record is the usual shape; consolidating includes is a real ticket, not a vibes change.
If DNSSEC or apex A records are also wrong, open those siblings. Mail configuration will not heal a broken NS delegation.
Step 4: wait TTL, then rescan
TTL lies less than Slack optimism. After the zone publishes, wait for the relevant TTL, then run the same-domain rescan. Paste the new Mail configuration evidence into the handoff note. If delivery still fails after public records look right, the next stop is the mailbox vendor's authentication tools, not another hopeful SPF string.
Pitfalls
Inbox proof ≠ routing proof. Receiving one test message does not mean public sender-policy matches the brand story.
Panel toggle without TXT. Enabling "authenticate mail" in a SaaS UI without publishing the required TXT records leaves the public surface unchanged.
Collapsing DNS records into mail. Clearing a stale CNAME does not publish DMARC. Publishing DMARC does not fix www.
Guessing includes. Copying another client's SPF chain is how you authorize the wrong senders. Use the vendor's current includes.
Step 5: document what you did not change
If SPF includes third-party ESPs, name them in the ticket. If DMARC is p=none on purpose during warmup, say so. Silent policy drift is how the next agency "fixes" you into quarantine. The public records should match the written story, including temporary states.
